Frequently Asked Questions

Psychotherapy is a collaborative and supportive process that helps individuals navigate emotional challenges, stress, and psychological distress with the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy provides a safe space to explore thoughts, emotions, experiences, and behavioural patterns with greater self-awareness and understanding.
Rather than focusing only on reducing symptoms, psychotherapy aims to help individuals better understand themselves, uncover underlying patterns, and create meaningful and lasting change. While every therapist may have their own unique approach, the shared goal of therapy is to foster healing, insight, emotional growth, and a stronger connection to oneself.

Therapy can support a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, self-esteem challenges, relationship difficulties, people-pleasing, emotional overwhelm, trauma, life transitions, and difficulties coping with daily stressors.
Therapy can also support personal growth, self-awareness, emotional resilience, and healthier relationships.
-
Therapy can be beneficial if you are feeling overwhelmed, emotionally stuck, anxious, disconnected, or struggling to cope with life’s challenges. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.
As a therapist, I have found that many individuals seek therapy to better understand themselves, improve coping strategies, strengthen relationships, and support overall emotional well-being!

First therapy sessions are really an opportunity to get to know you, often discussing what brings you to therapy, explore your goals, and begin building a supportive therapeutic relationship.
Your therapist may ask questions about your current challenges, personal history, coping strategies, and what you hope to gain from therapy. Sessions are collaborative, supportive, and tailored to your comfort level.
-
What we have found is that the length of therapy varies depending on each individual’s goals, needs, and experiences. Some individuals benefit from short-term therapy focused on specific concerns, while others find ongoing support helpful for deeper emotional work and long-term growth!
-
Your therapy frequency is completely up to you and often depends on your needs and goals. Many individuals begin with weekly sessions to build consistency and momentum, while others may attend biweekly or adjust frequency over time as therapy progresses.

Many extended health benefit plans in Ontario provide coverage for psychotherapy services; however, coverage depends on your individual insurance plan and the type of therapy coverage included in your benefits.
At A Welcoming Home Psychotherapy, services may be provided by Registered Psychotherapists (RP) and Registered Social Workers with a Master of Social Work degree (MSW, RSW). Many insurance plans offer coverage for one or both of these professional designations!
We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm:
Whether your plan covers services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and/or a Registered Social Worker (MSW, RSW)
Please note that psychotherapy services provided in private practice are generally not covered by OHIP in Ontario.
Following payment, clients will receive a receipt that can be submitted to their insurance provider for reimbursement, depending on their coverage.
-
Unfortunately, we do not currently direct bill (i.e. submit your insurance claims for you). After each session, a card on file will be changed, your receipt will be e-mailed to you which you can then submit yourself to your insurance company to be reimbursed.
