The Ease and Comfort of Virtual Therapy Right from Home
For many people, the idea of starting therapy comes with a mix of emotions. You might feel hopeful about having a space to talk, but also nervous about what therapy will actually be like. Maybe you’ve wondered what you’ll say, whether you’ll feel comfortable opening up, or even whether therapy can really feel meaningful when it happens through a screen.
These are questions I hear often, and they’re completely understandable.
As a therapist, one of the things I appreciate most about online therapy is how naturally it can fit into real life. Instead of having to step away from your day entirely, virtual therapy can become a small, intentional pause within it. You can have your session from your couch, your favourite chair, or another space where you feel comfortable and at ease.
And sometimes, that familiarity makes a bigger difference than we realize.
What is online therapy?
Online therapy, sometimes called virtual therapy or online psychotherapy, is simply therapy that takes place through a secure video platform rather than in a traditional therapy office. It allows you to meet with your therapist from a private space that works for you, whether that’s at home, during a break from work, or somewhere else where you have the privacy to be present.
Virtual therapy makes it possible to connect with a therapist without needing to travel to an office. At A Welcoming Home Psychotherapy, virtual therapy is available across Ontario, alongside in-person therapy in Liberty Village, Toronto.
But the benefits of online therapy go beyond simply avoiding a commute. For many people, it’s about creating a therapy experience that feels a little more comfortable and manageable from the very beginning.
Therapy from a space that already feels like yours
There can be something comforting about not having to walk into an unfamiliar office to talk about things that may already feel difficult or vulnerable. When you’re at home, you’re in a space that you know. You know where you’ll sit, what’s around you, and what helps you feel grounded. You might have a blanket nearby, your favourite mug on the table, or your dog wandering in and out of the room.
These little things may seem insignificant, but they can help create a sense of familiarity while you're doing something that can sometimes feel emotionally challenging. Of course, being at home doesn’t automatically make therapy easy. Therapy asks us to slow down, be honest with ourselves, and sometimes sit with feelings we’ve been avoiding. But being in a familiar environment can remove some of the extra discomfort that comes with getting to therapy in the first place.
For some people, that means they’re able to settle in more quickly and feel a little more like themselves during a session. I think that’s one of the things that can make online psychotherapy feel so approachable!
Making therapy fit into your actual life
Life is busy. Between work, relationships, family responsibilities, errands, appointments, and everything else that seems to fill our calendars, adding one more thing can sometimes feel overwhelming. This is one of the reasons online therapy can be such a helpful option. There’s no commute to and from a therapy office, no sitting in traffic, and no need to build extra travel time into your day. You can finish your session and take a few minutes to yourself before jumping back into whatever comes next.
That can be especially meaningful after a session where you’ve talked about something personal or emotionally heavy. Rather than immediately getting into your car or heading back into a busy environment, you can give yourself a little room to breathe, make a tea, take a walk, or simply sit quietly for a few minutes.
Therapy doesn’t have to be another thing you rush through. It can be a space in your week where you intentionally slow down. For someone balancing work, school, family, relationships, or other responsibilities, that flexibility can make it feel more realistic to prioritize your mental health.
You don’t have to feel “put together” to come to therapy
One of my favourite things about online therapy is that it can take away some of the pressure to have everything figured out before you show up. You don’t need to arrive with the perfect explanation for how you’re feeling. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to talk about. And you definitely don’t need to have your life neatly organized before starting therapy.
You can show up exactly as you are.
Maybe you’re having a great day. Maybe you’re exhausted. Maybe you’ve spent the entire morning overthinking something and can’t quite put your thoughts into words. Maybe you’re sitting in a hoodie with a coffee beside you and wondering where to even begin.
That’s okay. As therapists, we know that meaningful conversations don’t always happen in perfectly prepared moments. Sometimes the most important things come up when we simply give ourselves the space to slow down and notice what’s actually going on.
Online therapy can make that feel a little more natural because you’re not stepping into a formal environment and trying to immediately switch into your “therapy self.” You’re already in your own space, and we can begin from there.
Creating a space where you feel safe enough to be honest
Feeling comfortable and feeling safe are not exactly the same thing, but they often work together. Therapy requires vulnerability. You may be talking about anxiety, relationships, self-doubt, stress, grief, past experiences, or parts of yourself that you don’t often share with other people. Having some control over your surroundings can make it easier to settle into those conversations.
For some people, that means closing the door, putting their phone on silent, grabbing a blanket, or choosing a quiet corner of their home. For others, it might mean sitting in their car during their lunch break because that’s the only private space they have available that day.
There isn’t one “right” way to create your therapy space. What matters is finding an environment where you can feel reasonably comfortable, private, and present for the conversation.
And if you don’t have a perfect space at home? That's okay too. Therapy doesn’t require a picture-perfect room or a completely quiet house. Real life happens. Kids interrupt. Dogs bark. Doorbells ring. Sometimes life makes an appearance during therapy, and that’s part of being human.
Sometimes the hardest part is simply getting started
When people are considering therapy, I often think the biggest barrier isn’t necessarily the therapy itself. It’s taking that first step. Reaching out can feel vulnerable. Booking an appointment can feel intimidating. You might wonder whether your concerns are “serious enough,” whether you’ll know what to talk about, or whether you’ll actually connect with your therapist. Those questions are incredibly common.
Online therapy can make the practical side of getting started feel a little more approachable. You can have your first session from a space that already feels familiar, without having to navigate a new building, a new waiting room, or a commute on top of everything else you’re already carrying.
But more importantly, therapy isn’t about creating another place where you need to perform or have it all together. It’s about creating a space where you can be honest. A space where you can pause and say, “I’m struggling with this,” or “I don’t really know what’s going on with me,” or even, “I know something needs to change, but I don’t know where to start.”
And from there, we can work together.
Online therapy can still feel deeply personal
As a therapist, I have heard many clients worry that therapy through a screen won’t feel as personal or connected as being in the same room. And while online therapy is different from sitting across from someone in an office, different doesn’t necessarily mean less meaningful.
Connection can still happen through a screen. You can still laugh together, have difficult conversations, sit with uncomfortable feelings, notice patterns, and work toward a better understanding of yourself. You can still feel seen, heard, supported, and understood.
As a therapist, my goal isn’t simply to provide you with a place to talk. It’s to create a space where you feel comfortable enough to explore what’s happening beneath the surface, at a pace that feels manageable for you. Sometimes that work begins from a therapy office. Sometimes it begins from your couch. Either way, what matters most is the relationship we build and the space we create together.
Making room for yourself
There can be a tendency to put ourselves last. We take care of work, family, relationships, responsibilities, and everyone else’s needs, and then wonder why we’re feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or burnt out. Making time for therapy is one way of saying, I matter too. It doesn’t mean everything has to be falling apart before you reach out. You don’t have to wait until you’re completely overwhelmed. Therapy can also be a place to better understand yourself, work through patterns that aren't serving you anymore, build confidence, improve your relationships, or simply have somewhere to put down some of the things you’ve been carrying.
Sometimes, having that space available from home makes it just a little easier to take the first step. If you’ve been thinking about online therapy in Ontario but aren’t sure where to begin, you don’t have to have all the answers before reaching out. We can start with what’s happening right now and figure out the rest together.
You don’t need to show up with everything figured out. You just need to show up as yourself.
If this resonates with you
Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially when you’re not entirely sure what to expect. That’s okay. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you reach out. You can come as you are, bring whatever feels important, and we can take it from there.
